In this article, we’ll focus on interior design, going over some of the fundamental principles of the art to help you make your space look its best.
- Balance – In interior design, the term balance refers to how various visual elements are arranged. The basic idea is that one side of a room should have about as much visual weight as the other side, rather than having one side crammed full of stuff and the other side completely empty. Balance is created not just through the shape and size of objects, but also their color, texture, and material.
- Rhythm – While rhythm is originally a musical term, it has long been used in visual art as well. In interior design, rhythm refers to the repetition and contrast of a visual elements within a space, which helps the whole space come together cohesively. You can create rhythm by using the same color or shape in multiple ways within your design—for example, by using a color on your throw pillows, repeating it in a piece of wall art, and including it again in your curtains.
- Emphasis – Great interior design involves creating emphasis, or arranging the elements to draw the eye to a particular point in the room. If you try to give every part of your design equal importance, it will seem scattered or boring, so it’s best to choose a specific focal point to draw the eyes.
