Most of us could use a handyman from time to time, whether to help with small jobs that we don’t know how to do or for those projects that we just never seem to have time for. Hiring a handyman can be a great idea, but there are some things to consider when choosing someone to tackle smaller tasks in your home.
- Research. While it may seem super convenient to hire the first handyman who shows up in an internet search, the best way to ensure that the person you hire will do a great job is to do some research. Look at online reviews like Yelp, Google My Business, or Angi, or ask friends and neighbors for referrals.
- Qualifications. The term “handyman” can be used as a blanket term for many different job skills. Ask questions and interview more than one candidate before selecting someone to do the work. Find out about industry experience and make sure they are well qualified to do the job you are hiring them to do.
- Licensed and Insured. Just because you find an ad online or in a mailer does not mean that a potential candidate is licensed and insured. Depending on the scope of your project, the handyman may need a contractor license. Don’t be afraid to ask for proof of this information.
- Get It in Writing. Before beginning any construction or repair project, be sure to discuss the scope of the work to be done, payment, work schedule and warranties. All of these aspects should be clearly laid out in document form and signed by both parties.
